At the Kindergarten, the children are about 4/5 years old. They are mainly from the poor villages in and around the area and they will be very excited to see you. You will be one of the first westerners they have met! The kindergarten, like kindergartens throughout the world is informal, and the children will want to play with you more than be ‘taught’ in a formal sense. If you can start to get them enthused about coming to school, and perhaps give them a few very basic English phrases such as simple greetings, you will have done a great job and hopefully an enjoyable one too! As a volunteer in the Kindergarten program, you may like to provide assistance to the Care Centre Manager in 2 key ways: The first is to help look after the children. Secondly, you may like to provide general assistance to the kindergarten teachers, to play with the kids, to design some games in English. Your programme once you are at the kindergarten will typically be as follows, although please note this is subject to change depending on what is happening at the centre at the time of your visit. The programme following the cultural awareness week is similar to that described under ’Volunteer English Teaching’. In particular you will be based at our centre throughout your programme, but you will ‘teach’ for slightly less hours (about 10 hours a week) Monday to Friday. You will be issued with a schedule during your first week at our Centre whilst you are on the Cultural Immersion Week. ‘Teaching’ is in inverted commas! These are young children at a kindergarten and the emphasis is much more on entertainment and amusement (for them as well as you!) as it is on a more formal syllabus. Restrictions on Timings: Whilst this programme starts weekly please note that the children are in the kindergarten during the Spring Festival. (in Jan. or Feb.) You should note it can be extremely cold there in winter and you are advised to check the weather for the time you are thinking of going. The aim of this program is to support the children in this rural kindergarten. You have the power to enlarge their horizons, enthusing them about school and even teaching them some basic english, a skill that will be invaluable as they grow into adulthood.

Accommodation is in shared bedrooms of 2-8 people. Upgraded accommodation options are available for couples, families or those with a slightly larger budget who prefer 4* hotel luxury. Rooms in the centre are equipped with fans, hot and cold water and western style toilets. Wifi is also available in the center. ‘Optional Extras’ for accommodation whilst at Fengyan: To stay at our centre in rooms for families or couples (Please note however that such accommodation is limited and depends on availability at the time of booking) or to stay at a nearby western style 4star hotel with your own room and air conditioning (This option is particularly attractive to somewhat older participants who have a slightly larger budget and choose to spend that on their ‘home comforts’)

Guanxi became an autonomous region of China in 1958 and is found in the far south of China. It is a beautiful area marked by mountains, rivers and valleys. There is a small local shop which sells snacks but to reach ATMs and shops, it is a 30 minute bus journey into the town There are so many wonderful sights and places to visit in this area and a guide book can tell you everything you could want to know, but here are a few ideas: The Li River: ?this river spans 80km from Guilin to Yangshou and is decorated with rolling hills, unique cliffs, caves and comfortable boats and should not be missed! Yangshuo: ?a picturesque city famous for its surrounding hills, rivers and bar streets! Seven Star Park: famed for its rock formations, the park includes many different attractions including the Flower Bridge, SevenStar Cave, Camel Hill and even a zoo!
