Set in an untouched natural environment, well away from the tourist-trail, our projects offers the opportunity to interact with the majestic “gentle-giants” in their natural habitat. During your six-day stay at the program, you will work up-close with Mahouts and get the chance to get up close to the elephants as well as contribute to their well-being through various activities. During your time here, you will get to bathe the elephants, trek with them and assist at the elephant nursery, hospital, museum and much more! During the week, you will share the life of the mahouts and learn more about the lifestyle of this centuries-old culture. You will start by following our 3 days ‘Exploration’ programme. Then you will be proposed to assist us in the Center’s development by participating in community work projects on site. You will have a choice between a range of activities (non-exhaustive list): • Help vets and mahouts prepare elephant food; • Produce elephant dung paper; • Create handicraft with the paper; • Help cleaning the breeding area; • Assist in the kitchen and receive Lao cooking lessons; • Help our staff learning English language; • Maintenance work (painting, construction, cleaning, electricity, water systems); • Gardening: tree nursery, organic vegetable garden, botanical forest trek; • Photography and artwork; • And any other activity depending on projects going on at the Center The purpose of this project, is to rescue endangered elephants from the wild. The elephants may have previously been used for logging or other activities which may be described as "human exploitation". The elephants will remain at the center for their whole lives, where they are cared for and loved. The center tries to replicate the natural environment of the elephants as closely as possible.
At this location there are 2 people per room and shared bathrooms and communal wash facilities with hot showers. For those looking for more privacy and a higher level of comfortable, individual bungalows are available as well. Well-balanced meals are provided daily, all sourced using local ingredients and flavours.
The historic town of Sayaboury is commonly referred to as the "Elephant Capital" of Laos. The Elephant Centre itself is located at the foot of a naturally forested peninsula dividing into the incredible Nam Tien Lake. Whilst at the centre, you cannot help but simply bask at the stunning view over Phou Xang (a.k.a Elephant Mountain). The Elephant Conservation is deservedly Sayaboury’s biggest attraction and the likelihood is that during your stay here you will be making the most of this and the beautiful surroundings and scenery. Sayaboury hosts a morning market where you can find delicious local food for those who want to experience the town itself!
