The medical program will allow the participant to come into constant close contact with the patients and medical staff at the facility. In this program, the participant will learn from the medical staff about the treatments they use for their patients, the majority of whom have medical issues concerning their limbs (arms, legs, feet and hands). The participant will shadow and observe a doctor in his/her daily routine, observe and experience common cases in treatments, medical exchange (experience/knowledge), assist with the treatments (occupational therapy), patient care and diagnostic examinations of patients where possible. Furthermore, the participants are expected to teach the local nurses and doctors Medical English and English conversation skills for body examinations and treatments and learn a bit of Laos language themselves to facilitate communication. This medical project will be coordinated by the organization’s staff and supervised by a staff member from the medical team at CMR. Part of the program fee will go to the medical center for the facilitation and supervision of this project. A truly unforgettable and life-changing experience will be gained through an authentic taste of Laotian culture. This will be in the form of daily interactions with Laotian people at the healthcare centre. Laotian people are very friendly and kind and they will enlighten your heart with their appreciation! The aim is to support the medical help and attention offered to a poor Laotian community. You will be actively helping patients in their rehabilitation process and will be able to exchange medical knowledge, both offering your previous knowledge whilst gaining new knowledge and experience.

The sleeping accommodation is located in the capital city of Laos, Vientiane. This accommodation/guesthouse has rooms which will be shared by 2 or 4 people on a single gender basis. All of the rooms are equipped with a western style toilet and shower. The accommodation is also equipped with free wifi. Three meals during the day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are provided by the organization and will generally take place at the accommodation and project site, unless stated otherwise. We offer an American style breakfast and delicious Laotian dishes for lunch and dinner (vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian). Please note that during the weekends only 2 meals per day are provided (breakfast and dinner).

Vientiane is the capital and largest city of Laos and this is where participants will be staying. It is a laid-back, French-influenced city situated on the banks of the Mekong River near to the border of Thailand and may well be the cleanest city in the whole of Southeast Asia. With manicured roadside gardens, you will hardly believe you were in one of the poorest countries in the world. This ancient city, with a population of around 400.000 people, is very different from any other capital city in Southeast Asia. With its authentic Laotian and French colonial style, it truly is ‘a pearl at the Mekong’! The project locations and sleeping accommodation are located in the heart of the city of Vientiane. This city offers all the facilities and amenities that you could need. Numerous ATM machines are scattered around the city where money can be obtained. Internet cafes, grocery stores, supermarkets and other shops are located all around the city. Vientiane also has a wide variety of eateries, restaurants, coffee bars, drinking bars and other nightlife establishments where people can relax after their day. Bicycles are available to use from your accommodation (just ask) – this is a very popular and the most efficient way of getting around in the city! You will be taken to a Night Market on Monday night. This market is on every night and so from then on, although no other activities are scheduled outside of your program, you are free to explore on your own! As the capital city, Vientiane itself has a lot to offer in terms of sites and entertainment. Although a guidebook will be able to talk you through everything that the city has to offer, here are a couple of ideas: Patuxai – Vientiane’s take on the Arc de Triomphe and their own victory monument. You can climb it to enjoy the panoramic views! Wat Si Muang – A Buddhist temple for those who want to absorb some religious culture. Vientiane is also within close proximity to two large National parks: Phou Phanang and Phou Khao Khouay for those who want to explore a more natural landscape
