Learning about the culture and lifestyle is one of the most important aspects of travelling. By doing so, you will know how to interact with locals, know the do’s and don’t and get a better chance to fully indulge in your new surroundings. Our culture week does exactly this. During the program, you will learn the basics of the culture, explore the location and new surroundings, learn how to cook Ugandan food, sightsee and more. Moreover, you will also get the chance to meet other participants and make new friends! The aim of our program is to give better understand of Ugandan culture to participants and prepare them for their stay in the country.
You will be staying in our center in the village. The accommodation itself is quite basic and authentic. You will be accommodated in a room with 4 – 8 beds and share the bathroom with your roommates. There is wifi available at the center. There are limited laundry facilities, so expect to wash your clothes by hand. All participants are expected to be environmentally aware and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and organized. Food will be Ugandan-style, which means lots of vegetables, meats, potato, banana, bread, pancake etc. We provide breakfast, lunch and dinner on weekdays and only lunch and dinner on weekends.
You will be accommodated in a very rural area, which will give you the opportunity to see and experience the real Uganda. There are many local shops near our center, all located 10-15 minutes walking distance. Transportation to Mukono (30 minutes away) or Kampala are available. A van departs every 30 minutes to Mukono and every hour to Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Not far from our center (within 30 min – 90 minutes driving distance) are many things to see and do such as Kampala, the Ugandan capital, which boasts a great nightlife and is filled with museums and history. Also close is the opportunity to raft or even jet boat the headwaters of the Nile River.
