In Kalagala village, there are many nurseries and kindergartens open for children up to five years old whose parents cannot care for them during the day due to their jobs. During this program, you will be spending your day working to take care of the local children by playing with them, feeding them, bathing them and any other things that might be needed. Moreover, you will get the chance to coordinate activities that will prove valuable for the children such as classes, learning music, practicing sports, teaching basic English, etc. Through learning English and intercultural exchange with our participants, the perspective of these children will grow further afar from their tiny village. Furthermore, you will get to learn about them and immerse in their culture. The aim is to help local children experience intercultural exchange and improve their English skills.

You will be staying in our center in the village. The accommodation itself is quite basic and authentic. You will be accommodated in a room with 4 – 8 beds and share the bathroom with your roommates. There is wifi available at the center. There are limited laundry facilities, so expect to wash your clothes by hand. All participants are expected to be environmentally aware and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and organized. Food will be Ugandan-style, which means lots of vegetables, meats, potato, banana, bread, pancake etc. We provide breakfast, lunch and dinner on weekdays and only lunch and dinner on weekends.

You will be accommodated in a very rural area, which will give you the opportunity to see and experience the real Uganda. There are many local shops near our center, all located 10-15 minutes walking distance. Transportation to Mukono (30 minutes away) or Kampala are available. A van departs every 30 minutes to Mukono and every hour to Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Not far from our center (within 30 min – 90 minutes driving distance) are many things to see and do such as Kampala, the Ugandan capital, which boasts a great nightlife and is filled with museums and history. Also close is the opportunity to raft or even jet boat the headwaters of the Nile River.

Additional equipment: – Clothes that cover your shoulders and your legs during your time at the nurseries/kindergartens. – Optional: Teaching materials of your preference such as games, color pencils, English books, toys, etc. Open all year, starting on Mondays, arrival on Saturdays or Sundays and departure on Saturday morning, participation fee 175€ per week.
