On this project, you will get your hands dirty with construction assignments. Our main focus when constructing is working at our own school allocated to the poor. This school was built with the help of previous participants and local tradesman and today, over three hundred children attend every day. Despite the previous efforts, the work here is far from done and we continue to construct pathways, toilets, walls, etc. Moreover, those with artistic talents can help decorate the walls by creating images and sketches of their home countries and cultures. We have the feeling that this will be a nice way of reflecting the hard and good work that has been done by our participants over the past years. Other construction efforts might be carried out in the local village (renovating and building houses and sanitation facilities) or working on construction projects at the local hospital – this very much depends on the needs of any particular time and so our participants will be using their construction skills where they are most needed! This project aims to improve the quality of life for under-privileged citizens in and around Samraong. The construction projects greatly improve the environment of the poverty-stricken people within this area. The main project site is the Greenway School. However, we assist the local people with all development construction projects as well.
The accommodation in Samraong is based on single gender rooms with a maximum of 4 people per room. They are equipped with a fan, cold shower and wifi.. There are no laundry facilities, so expect to wash your clothes by hand. However, there are some places that you can do laundry in the town too at a small cost. There are bikes available at no extra cost, which you can use to explore the area during your free time. All food is included during your stay. The meals will be typical Cambodian style, including plenty of rice dishes, meat and at times, western food. There are three meals served during the week inside the accommodation and two during the weekend. Moreover, there are snacks available between meals.
Samraong, which name translates from Khmer into “impenetrable jungle”, is a town located in northwestern Cambodia, close to the border with Thailand. You will be located in a small, rural village located in the outskirts of town. This remote location will give you a taste of what rural Cambodia looks and feels like, while at the same time allowing you to explore some of Cambodia’s highlights, as Siem Reap is located only two hours away. There are ATMs in Samraong as well as a bank. There are numerous local shops where you can get the basics. There is a nearby park where you can relax or play volleyball during your free time. Siem Reap is two hours away from the accommodation. Participants often opt to head there during the weekends to explore the famous Angkor Wat or enjoy the nightlife.
