These children are about 4 to 5 years old, they will all be excited to new participants and exceptionally welcoming, due partly to the natural and genuine friendliness of all Balinese, especially children, but also the fact that they have not met many westerners. By assisting the local staff, participants will increase the confidence of the children and learn them better English which will help them in so many ways in the future. The kindergarten, like kindergartens throughout the world is informal, and the children will want to play, more than be ‘taught’ in a formal sense. This program demands that you love children and understand their behavior, as you will be surrounded with loads of them every day and their friendliness can sometimes become over exuberant, but they are children after all. However, just by getting them enthused about coming to school, giving them some very basic English phrases such as simple greetings, you will may well have sown the seeds of a lifelong learning habit and doing a great and enjoyable job in the process.
Volunteers will be accommodated in one of Green Lions’ volunteer houses in the village of Tukadmunga. Located on the street leading to the beach 5 minute by walk. Village life is quintessentially local and you will get a good chance to see typical Balinese life – roosters crowing and all! where you will get the chance to interact with local families and practice your new-found language skills. Volunteers can expect to share a room (dormitory style) with four to eight other volunteers. The bathroom is shared, with a hot water shower and western toilets.
