Babies Child Care – This child care center was started under the Child and Labor Department of Sri Lanka. All the children could not receive the needed care at home and are provided with better living conditions, shelter and food. The child care center in Sri Lanka operate with minimal resources and a handful of staff. By placing participants here we help the child care centers carry out daily operations without interruptions. Participants are required to strictly follow the rules and adapt to the conditions of the center and not compare them to Western standards. Local centers have their own methods of working with children.The child care center looks after babies and provides them with food, clothing, childcare and medical care with the help of other private organizations and with the help of the participants. Participants will be required to care for around 15 – 20 babies all of whom are below 12 months old. Their duties involve helping the staff in cleaning beds, changing nappies, bed sheets, and pillows and keeping the area clean and sterile. You will also have to help prepare baby food and feed the babies. Elders’ Home – The Elders home is more than 15 years old and provides a better quality of life to elderly people. They provide food, shelter and medical facilities free of charge. At the moment, they house 75 adults both male and female aged between 50 to 80 years. The home provides accommodation, food, clothing and medication with the help of private organizations and you. Elders’ Homes in Sri Lanka operate with minimal resources and a handful of staff. By placing you here we help the elders’ homes carry out daily operations without interruptions. You are required to strictly follow the rules and adapt to the conditions of the elders’ home and not compare them to Western standards. Local elders’ homes have their own methods of working with the elderly.The main idea of this project is to “GIVE LOVE AND CARE.” You are required to care for the elderly in the following ways: Cleaning them; giving them a bath; listening to what they have to say; keeping them occupied by talking to them, playing with them or reading to them; helping the sisters to clean the home and prepare food if required and attending to sick elders by giving them medicines, etc. Child Care – Both child care centers are run by Catholic organizations. St Joseph’s Orphanage is more than 40 years old and the Bathshalom Boys Home is approximately 10 years old. Child care centers in Sri Lanka operate with minimal resources and a handful of staff. By placing you here we help the center carry out daily operations without interruptions. You are required to strictly follow the rules and adapt to the conditions of the centers and not compare them to Western standards. Local centers have their own methods of working with children. Building and Renovation – The project involves rebuilding and renovating Buddhist temples in and around Kandy. Work in the temple includes repainting the temples, cleaning in and around temples, helping with the construction work, interacting with the children and villagers and helping the temples arrange community centers for the youth of the village. The project aims to give the local communities a good education and basic knowledge of good health and care in order for them to gain a better and secure future.
You will be accommodated in our center which is located 2 kilometers away from Kandy center. Our rooms allocate 4-6 people based on a single-gender basis and shared toilet with your roommates. There is a beautiful garden by the river to relax in and dining and lounge areas where you can hang out with fellow participants. Furthermore, there is a refrigerator which you are welcome to use to store food and beverages. Safety lockers are available to store your belongings. We do not have Wi-Fi at the centre. You will be provided with three meals a day on weekdays and two meals per day on weekends. The meals are a mix of Western and Sri Lankan food, consisting mainly of vegetarian dishes including rice and vegetables. You can also eat out at any of the local restaurants.
Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka is a major tourist destination. About 115 km from Colombo at 465 meters above sea level. Famous for the Temple of the Tooth and many other temples the city could be called the cultural capital of the island. This bustling market town is rich in cultural diversity has plenty to offer to the tourists from songs dances and handicrafts to ancient temples and adventure activities.Kandy was a royal capital and the last stronghold of the Kandyan kings against foreign power, holding out against them for about 300 years. The two main Buddhist Chapters are based here and formed the last centre of independent Buddhist thought during colonial times. Our house is located 2 kilometers away from the city center, where you can find anything you might need. The nearest ATM and supermarket are located a 15 minute walk away from our accommodation. The places to visit during your weekends or on your project holidays are the Royal Botanical Gardens, Knuckles mountain range, Udawatta kele sanctuary, Hortons plan national park and the railway museum.
Program participant criteria: Good knowledge and proficiency in English. Open all year, starting on Mondays, arrival on Sundays and departure on Saturday morning, participation fee 245 € per week. Program runs Mon-Fri, (free weekends), culture week mandatory to start the programme: 175€. Reception at BIA (Bandaranayake International Airport) on Saturdays and Sundays.
