ICYE India Kutumba was established in 1991, to provide an integrated foster care program for destitute disabled girls. ’Kutumba’ is derived from the sanskrit word meaning a joint family living together under one roof. Kutumba provides a home for these children, who we feel have been rejected twice, first by their families and then by society.
We work with physically and borderline mentally challenged young women and girls between the ages of 12 and 28. Our programmes include working with the disabled, preschoolers, school drop outs and extracurricular activities for students. We have 9 staff for these various projects. In poor families these children are seen as a drain on scarce resources since they cant contribute in terms of income or manpower. A poor rural household is ill equipped to handle disability; lacking the basic understanding, leave alone the finances or motivation. The tragedy is that due to lack of proper nourishment and medical facilities a large percentage of disabled children are in rural areas where there are no facilities for them at all. Volunteers can spend time with children aged 3-5 and with disabled aged 18-28. They will need to think of activities and create programmes for activities for children. They can also be music teachers or help in designing clothes.
The volunteer will live in host project or host family. Food will be provided by the host project or host family.
´Kutumba is in Bangalore North about 25 k.m. from the airport. We are in the suburbs with small hospitals, super markets and parks. It is in an area where we have plenty of NGO’s working with different categories. The weather is very moderate and most of the year one can manage with light and comfortable wear.
We would prefer women who are either teachers or physical therapists. Those who have knowledge in music and tailoring are also welcome. The participant should bring: Mosquito repellent (can be bought in Bangalore), Light warm clothes for rainy weather and winter, Games, toys or ideas for activities for the children. Volontariat de 4 à 16 semaines; frais supplémentaires de 400€ pour le 1er mois, puis 75€ par semaine. Placement individuel, programme ouvert toute l?année.
