“Jardín de Niños Salvador Maradiaga” is a public kindergarten that provides pre-school education to children between 4 to 5 years old. It currently has 31 students (20 girls and 11 boys). The staff members is composed of 2 teachers and 1 babysitter. The kindergarten’s mission is to guarantee educational services for children, helping them in their human development, with the support and participation of the parents, educational entities, government and the community in general. The kindergarten’s main objectives are: to improve the quality and efficiency of the educational processes at pre-school level, guaranteeing coverage of various subjects and forming future citizens engaged with their community and country. Main Activities The kindergarten’s main activities are: Teach the basic pedagogic subjects of pre-school education. Civic and cultural activities according to the planned schedule. Physical education activities. Volunteer tasks Teach basic English Assist in the dance lessons (typical Honduran dances). Creating different types of handicrafts and teach them to the children. Learning about different Honduran traditional games and playing with the children. Minimum (weeks): 4 Maximum (weeks): 16 Project available for January.
Living with a Host Family.
San Francisco de Yojoa is a small peasant village of about 2,000 – 3,000 people, located 86 km south of San Pedro Sula, close to the Lake of Yojoa and the Pulhapanzak Waterfalls. It is a municipality of the industrial department Cortés. The majority of the population is Catholics, but there are also many families that are Evangelic or Protestants. Religion forms a big important part of the population. It’s a remote rural area and economic activity is mostly in agricultural sectors like coffee,plantations and sugar cane. This village is a very secure and calm place with many welcoming inhabitants. Many foreigners have come to live here through ICYE Honduras; hence the inhabitants are used to treating foreigners and understand that at the beginning they don’t speak fluent Spanish.
Age: Older than 18. Gender: Preferably female. Languages: Spanish and English. Studies: None is specific. Abilities and Attitudes: The volunteer should be willing to work with small children, be very creative and propose new ideas to do handicrafts and artistic activities. Religion: Indifferent.
ICYE Honduras was founded in 1981. The committee is run by former exchangees and volunteers. The national office, located in Tegucigalpa is run by a four-staff team.
Voluntary service placements include working with homeless and street children, disabled, children’s rights, homes for the elderly, sick or homeless people, health clinics, human rights organisations, indigenous groups, primary schools, youth organisations, and social projects in general. Attendance of university courses is allowed provided it does not interfere with voluntary service.
