ICYE Kenya – STESP MID TERM PROGRAMME
Brief description and main aims To provide education, home and other basic needs to the vulnerable children and youth to help fight illiteracy and enhance economic empowerment. To provide vulnerable teen mothers, youth and women with skills to empower them economically. To fight child trafficking and gender based violence. To provide water and sanitation facilities to the children and vulnerable community members. To conduct training programs to youth and women at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS; To collaborate with other organizations with similar object for purpose of learning and resource exchange. Main Activities Teaching Record Keeping Baby-care Arts-music, dance, drama, poetry Games Volunteer tasks They will on specific occasions serve at the Reception &Office, Serve as assistant teacher in classes They will take children out to play, swim and other outdoor activities, They will help with marking and recording examination results for pupils They will provide life skill education to the pupils at the centre and those in the community including the youth and develop a mentorship programme. Serving food to the children. Helping the cook in kitchen Conducting community and family visits. They will help out with homework supervision on a daily basis and organize club activities including debate within the centre and those with other education centres in the community. The activities listed below will also be carried out by the volunteers during their time with us. Community Services including visiting the homes of the vulnerable children’s. Picnics, swimming and school trips. Health clinics and follow ups. Their initiated projects in the centre and community. Attending staff and other school meetings.
Kayole, Nairobi. About 30 minutes away from the city centre. Soweto is an urban un-regularized settlement scheme with a population of close to 80,000 while Kayole is a sites and service scheme with a population of 177,000. The two areas suffer from several environmental degradation as well as poor sanitation, crowding and poverty. Majority of residents are self employed.

The ICYE programme started in Kenya in 1989. ICYE Kenya is a registered NGO. It is composed of returnees, volunteers and a two-staff team working at the national office, located in Nairobi.
Voluntary service projects include assisting teachers in rural schools, working with the disabled, with street children, in the health service, on farms and in orphanages. Participants with professional skills like psychology, carpentry, typing, nursing, agriculture or languages might have access to other types of work placements.
