ICYE Kenya – STEPS MID TERM PROGRAMME
Brief description and main aims To promote public awareness on the rights of the disabled. To enhance strategies for sustainable development to parents of children with disabilities. To support disabled children through effective training in greenhouse farming technology. To reduce cases of starvation, hunger, malnutrition and dietary deficiency among disabled children by providing balanced meals. To provide education to children with disabilities through providing school materials e.g. books, pens, school uniforms, shoes, medical support. Main Activities Training persons with disabilities on disabilities rights and disability mainstreaming (assessment of early child disability identification ) Training parents of children with disabilities, on farming in greenhouse technology to provide food security. Physical implementation of tree nursery production and management, of all species of tree seedlings, fruits seedlings and flowers. Training on environmental conservation and management. Training persons with disability on HIV/AID management through nutritional support. Providing assistive devices to assist disabled who are in dire need on mobility. Supporting disabled children through education and attending various training program, provision of school uniforms, school fees, shoes, medical and medicine support and other livelihood support To provide community outreach forums to parents of children with disabilities on disabilities care and support. Homa-Bay county. About 6 hours away from Nairobi city. Homa-Bay county has agriculture as the main income generator. Most people practice farming. The people are very friendly. It is a few hours’ drive away from Lake Victoria. It has a generally warm climate.

The ICYE programme started in Kenya in 1989. ICYE Kenya is a registered NGO. It is composed of returnees, volunteers and a two-staff team working at the national office, located in Nairobi.
Voluntary service projects include assisting teachers in rural schools, working with the disabled, with street children, in the health service, on farms and in orphanages. Participants with professional skills like psychology, carpentry, typing, nursing, agriculture or languages might have access to other types of work placements.
