The organization was founded in 1999. The activities of the organisation focus on the rehabilitation and assistance to disabled (physically and mentally), elderly and underage unaccompanied people with migrant background. The volunteers can be involved in all the activities run by the organization with elderly, disabled and minors. They will have always a supportive role of local staff. In particular the activities they will be involved in are: Assisting minors, elderly and disabled people in their daily routine ; Assisting local staff in organizing and implementing recreational activities for their hosts ; Accompanying them in local excursions ; Organizing sessions of art therapy and music therapy.
Volunteers will live in a two-room apartment, provided with bathroom and kitchenette in Bivona. Each volunteer will have a single room. Food and beverage are offered by the hosting organization.
Bivona is an Italian town of 3,782 inhabitants of the province of Agrigento in Sicily. Surrounded by mountains Sicani, it is about 60 km far from the provincial capital (Agrigento) and about 90 km from Palermo, the regional capital. During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it was a major center of feudal Sicily and the first to be raised to the Dukedom.
We are looking for volunteers with a good level of flexibility and adaptability. It is also preferable if candidates have creative skills but this is not compulsory. // We can host 2 volunteers.
The "Associazione per la formazione, gli scambi e le attività interculturali" -AFSAI was founded in 1958 as an independent, legally registered organisation. It joined ICYE in 1978. There is a national office in Rome plus regional groups run by co-workers, most of them former exchangees.
Voluntary service placements are mainly in the social work field, exceptionally may include environmental projects. Actual placements may be at kindergartens, in projects working with the disabled and the elderly, rehabilitation of drug-addicts.
