AFAIJ SPAIN – MEDIUM TERM PROGRAMME ICYE STEPS
Brief description and main aims Promote environmental knowledge and archaeological heritage of the area, promote and disseminate knowledge in different areas. To sensitize young foreigners on environmental issues, recovery and maintenance of faunal and floral heritage. Generate intercultural dialogue and promote culture and Spanish traditions in a rural context and living in a small community. Generate intercultural and intergenerational dialogue between international volunteers, workers and local volunteers in the different centres. Main Activities ENVIRONMENT AREA Maintenance and recovery of the botanical garden, maintenance and cleaning of strategic sites for tourism development, support Volunteers Association, collaboration with units Fire and Civil Protection and carry out surveillance, monitoring, support staff and routes other volunteers for fire fighting, control around the village, cleaning and maintenance of the areas at risk of fire. Participation and support staff during the tourist visit in the Natural Park, collaboration with local volunteers in the maintenance and recovery of the "Chozos" (type of construction to be built in the fields, and it was used by shepherds and goatherds when they needed to spend the night if raining. YOUNG AND CHILDREN AREA The Village count on 1 primary school with 5 students during the winter that increase gradually till 50/60 students during spring and summer, volunteer could be help the workers in the different activities as games with the local volunteers, volunteer will could carry out different workshops, games, English classes, etc. Volunteer tasks ENVIRONMENT AREA: Cleaning and maintenance areas at forest fire risk Cleaning and maintenance of the botanical garden English translation of different nameplates floral heritage botanical garden Support and participate in fire prevention routes around the village Support and participation in the natural park tourist routes Support activities in the maintenance and recovery of the "Chozos" CHILDREN AND YOUNG AREA: Support school workers in the different activities, games and workshops for children Participation and collaboration in the various activities organized by local volunteers English workshops for children and young volunteers;
Volunteers will live in a flat located in the village, shared room with others volunteers, common use of the bathroom and Kitchen where volunteers can cook by themselves, Wi-Fi is available.
The little village of Monsagro, district of Salamanca in the Castilla y León region, count on 121 inhabitants during all the year, because of the ideal weather and the peaceful places this number increase during springs and summer on approximately 1.000 inhabitants. It is situated at 961 meters and is located in the Natural Park “Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia” all the territory belong to the Natural Hunting Reserve “Las Batuecas” composed by different small village. It is approx. 90 Kilometers far from Salamanca, 33 kilometers far from Ciudad Rodrigo (13.000 inhabitant’s approx) and 300 kilometers far from Madrid! It’s possible to get to Salamanca and to Ciudad Rodrigo by Bus and the most important cities of Castilla y León as well. The Village count on 1 primary school with 5 students during the winter that increase gradually till 50/60 students during spring and summer. Moreover offer: 1 bibliotheca, 1 Museum, the first floor is dedicated to hunting and environment in generally, the second to the ethnographic museum with great cultural heritage of the area, 1 archeology House, 1 botanical garden, 2 farmhouse, an association of older (recreation center), an future interactive museum of fossil, etc.
Volunteers must be over 18 years old with a strong motivation to participate in a rural environment project and a strong interest in the environment in general. Bring comfortable clothes.
AFAIJ is a Spanish non-profit organization established in 1999, whose main aim is to promote young people non-formal education through social and intercultural activities.
AFAIJ runs youth national and international voluntary service programmes as well as international trainings and seminars.
Most of the voluntary service projects are located in the Madrid region and include working with socially disadvantaged children, children and youth centres, disabled, HIV-AIDS prevention, anti-drugs, and communication projects.
