Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN) VIN is one of the few Nepali run organizations currently operating in Nepal whose mission serves to directly empower marginalized people and promote a greater sense of voluteering. Our projects operate year round and international volunteers can feel satisfied by contributing to an organization that is working to improve the quality of life of the Nepali people— with an emphasis on improving education for marginalized groups such as women and children.

Participate in a project which aims to reduce Nepal’s dependence on the more demanding and less profita- ble traditional terrace farming in exchange for agro- forestry farming. This is a form of land cultivation where crops are grown among trees. It provides a greater biodiversity and greater harvests. This is your chance to help ease traditional subsistence farmers onto new methods which greatly improves the quality of their lives. You will be placed in the project living quarters. Daily activities • Work under skilled Nepali farmers’ instructions, cultivating land and engaging in agroforestry. • Help maintain the living quarters and surroundings. • Carry out research activities . • Teach techniques of agroforestry (for experts in agriculture).

Daily activities Work at animal care centers. Spend quality one-on-one time with the animals. Provide exercise for the dogs by taking them for a walk Care and bathe/groom animals and keep shelter clean. Help promote friendly behavior towards animals.

Jitpur community of Kathmandu District, which is only about 11 km away from main ring road to Balaju, Kathmandu. Okhaldhunga, a beautiful and hilly district, is located in Everest Region of Nepal. It has limited developmental activities and facilities. From Kathmandu, the shortest bus route is about 250 km which is rough and takes one day to reach there. Leisure Activities: Either before or after your workcamp, there exists the option to undertake a short VIN-organized tour to one of Nepal’s nearby attractions.

2005 by a diverse group drawn from development workers, educationalists, social activists and other
VIN’s mission is to empower marginalised communities, with a focus on women and children,
through enhanced educational programs and community training to promote equality, economic
well-being and basic human rights.
Community Focused Programmes
VIN has a main community based pilot project in Jitpur, a rural community 11km from Kathmandu city.
The area was chosen because of its geographical location, lack of development agencies, people
interest, and its development needs. VIN has established 4 key programmes in Jitpur:
 Women’s Empowerment
 Children’s Development
ï‚· Youth Development
ï‚· Community Health
The organization’s objective is for these programmes to be run by the Jitpur community (independently of
VIN) by 2012. Our community volunteering projects are based on around above 4 major programmes.
Out of Community Support Programmes
VIN runs a number of other volunteer placement programmes not directly related to the Jitpur community
but indirectly these programmes still contribute to our main programs. The programmes include:
ï‚· Teaching English at Buddhist monasteries / nunneries
ï‚· International journalism
ï‚· Environment, conservation and agro forestry
ï‚· Orphanage support
ï‚· Working with disable people (e.g., deaf, elderly)
