GREEN LION ISRAEL
This program is an essential way for you to understand Israeli culture and give you an opportunity to learn about the country’s rich history and culture. Not only is it an enjoyable and fun filled week that will make your trip more enjoyable, it will help you appreciate your stay later on if you are participating in further programs. You will learn more about the Israeli people, culture, customs, language and history, visiting highlights of both Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Throughout the week you’ll be staying in both cities and getting a feel of the local vibe. You’ll uncover the holy city of Jerusalem, venturing by foot through the Armenian, Christian, Jewish and Muslim quarters, various ancient sites, and sacred religious grounds. Then whisked away to Tel Aviv for the remainder of their culture week where you will have a chance to see what it’s like to live in “the city that never sleeps.” You’ll cover housekeeping rules of Israel too! Learning about the do’s and don’t’s of Israeli culture, learning about the best way to get around Israel, and picking up some of the local language.
You will stay at a hostel in a samesex dorm room with 4 other people per room and a shared bathroom. The room is basic but comfortable and has bunk beds, bed linens, air conditioning, cable TV, a closet, as well as a minifridge, all which you are welcome to use. A female only dorm room, which holds up to 4 other people, is also available upon request. Breakfast is included and served at a restaurant next to the hostel from 7:00am. It is a full Israeli breakfast which consists of eggs, breads, vegetables, labneh (a type of yogurt), juice, coffee and tea. You will receive a food voucher to purchase lunch and/or dinner for the duration of your program. The voucher is equivalent to 50 shekels a day and can be used at most eateries around Tel Aviv, allowing you to taste the variety of local food as much as you like.
During the first two nights of the Culture Week, you’ll be staying at a hostel in the center of Jerusalem near the famous Machne Yehuda Market. You can find several services nearby: Supermarket:? Located 5-10 minutes walking distance from the volunteer accommodation. There are several ATMs within walking distance from the volunteer accommodation. Laundromats are within walking distance of the volunteer accommodation. There is a large open-air market about 25 minutes walking distance from the volunteer accommodation and small kiosks that sell fresh fruit and vegetables within 10 minutes walking. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance. Eirat The international beach resort of Eilat is only 50 kilometers away if you want to enjoy some snorkeling, go to an internet cafe, or enjoy the vibrant nightlife. Tel Aviv For those that want to see the rest of the country, it is easy to use public transportation and explore Tel Aviv or the north of Israel. We recommend that no trip to Israel be completed without a mud bath and a float in the Dead Sea.
