You will be assisting an organization that has been working for over 20 years to develop individuals with special needs to their fullest potential by providing them with high quality support and rehabilitation services. You can expect to work on a range of projects including sheltered workshops, leisure and social clubs, afterschool programs, rehabilitative and nursing daycare, and adult rehabilitation. The projects involve training and providing employment for special needs adults according to each individual’s abilities and needs. This includes assisting clients with their work, such as packaging jewelry, educational materials for kindergartens, etc. You also have the opportunity to assist the staff in afternoon leisure and enrichment activities, such as watching movies or plays, cooking classes, and holiday celebrations. The afterschool program provides a complementary framework to the regular school hours and organizes recreational and social activities, as well as therapy in the afternoon. This program caters to children with varying levels of intellectual, physical, behavioral and developmental disabilities. You will assist the staff and engage with the children during artsandcrafts, soccer, baseball, baking, music, drama, etc. You can also spend your time helping infants and toddlers with developmental delays by providing them with individualized treatment and rehabilitation services, as well as support for their family members.
You will stay at a hostel in a same-sex dorm room with 4 other people per room and a shared bathroom. The room is basic but comfortable and has bunk beds, bed linens, air conditioning, cable TV, a closet, as well as a minifridge, all which you are welcome to use. A female-only dorm room, which holds up to 4 other people, is also available upon request. Breakfast is included and served at a restaurant next to the hostel from 7:00am. It is a full Israeli breakfast which consists of eggs, breads, vegetables, labneh (a type of yogurt), juice, coffee and tea. You will receive a food voucher to purchase lunch and/or dinner for the duration of your program. The voucher is equivalent to 50 shekels a day and can be used at most eateries around Tel Aviv, allowing you to taste the variety of local food as much as you like.
During the first two nights of the Culture Week, you’ll be staying at a hostel in the center of Jerusalem near the famous Machne Yehuda Market. There are several ATMs within walking distance from the volunteer accommodation. Laundromats are within walking distance of the volunteer accommodation. There is a large open-air market about 25 minutes walking distance from the volunteer accommodation and small kiosks that sell fresh fruit and vegetables within 10 minutes walking. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance. Eirat The international beach resort of Eilat is only 50 kilometers away if you want to enjoy some snorkeling, go to an internet cafe, or enjoy the vibrant nightlife.
