This programme is for volunteers interns and aspiring coaches, through our grassroots projects they will use sport as a vehicle for combating prevalent social issues in some of St. Lucia’s most disadvantaged communities. Volunteers will work within schools and communities tackling issues such as gang culture and childhood obesity through sport. Coaches will work with children (aged 4-12), adolescents (13-17) and senior teams. The overall aim of our grassroots projects is to equip all children in the region with the means to play and enjoy sport and reap the obvious health and developmental benefits. Our volunteers will achieve this by providing sessions for our grassroot and school of excellence projects, tackling the most prevalent issues facing the region’s youth, while improving sport in the Caribbean holistically.

A large open-plan guesthouse with plenty of space (holds 12 max including tour coordinators). The 3 bedrooms each have flat screen plasma TV with American cable and movie + sport channels, for coach’s downtime. Two large shared bathrooms with showers and all amenities. Our spacious kitchen area is equipped with all the required utensils and is suitable for multiple people cooking at once. The majority of inhouse social activity takes place either in our living area which has the largest of our four TVs, sofas and a dining area, or the Balcony that looks toward Choc beach and is the notorious heartbeat of the house during gatherings or preparations for nights out. Also included: WiFi broadband – Laundry Room – House telephone (only for receiving calls) – AmericanStyle Fridge freezer and ice dispenser. The house is in a safe area, and is directly neighbouring a well known holiday resort, with 24/7 security on the gates We have lockable burglar bars and gate on all entry points and an electric code system on all the doors. United Through Sport also has a link with a local taxi company to aid volunteers in travelling around safely in their free time.

St Lucia is a small island stretching 27 miles long (north to south) by 14 miles wide (east to west). During our placements, volunteers will travel across the island’s breathtaking beaches and steep coastlines, through its magnificent rainforestchoked interior and up the iconic twin peaks; ‘Pitons’. In this totally tropical mix of volcanic mountains, lush jungles and blooming orchids, waterfalls and healing sulphur springs, something’s always happening… Based in the north of the island, accommodation is located perfectly between St. Lucia’s prime tourist and party location the Rodney Bay Strip and the country’s capital Castries. Next door to a shopping mall with all required services; inc. a supermarket, post office, pharmacy, bank, taxi rank and bus stop. The nearest beach ‘Halcyon’ is a two minute walk away. Our remit to spread our work and projects across the island means your placement will cause you to see all corners of the ‘Helen’ of the West Indies. Conversely you will be afforded enough free time to visit the sites at your own pace.

No coaching qualifications are required but an ability and understanding of the sport they intend to coach is important as well as a passion and enthusiasm for working with kids. Volunteers should bring a whistle and appropriate clothing to coach in (shorts, tshirt, sports shoes). All required coaching equipment is provided (e.g. balls, cones, bibs) however volunteers are welcome to bring extra equipment for their chosen sport if they wish.
