GREEN LION RWANDA
Our culture week is the perfect way to start getting acquainted to your new surroundings. Throughout the week, you will be introduced to Rwandan culture through cooking lessons, basic language lessons, learning the do’s &dont’s, a visit to a museum, walking tours through the tiny rural village we are set in in order for you to get to know the place and where everything is as well as sightseeing around the city. Moreover, you will get a full day of relaxation by a visit to Muhazi Beach, where we will enjoy a lunch outside and swim in the sea or simply sunbathe and enjoy the great weather Rwanda boasts. To finish off the week, we will pay a visit to our project sites for you to get a first-hand introduction to our projects. You will also get the chance to work a bit on our placements. All in all, our culture week will get you fully settled and ready for the upcoming weeks if you are staying longer to work our projects. It will also be a great opportunity to meet and bond with fellow participants! Aims &Objectives: To give a better understanding of Rwandan culture to our participants through first-hand experiences
You will be accommodated in our center which provides shared rooms with 4 – 8 people per room and a shared toilet. There are cold showers available and flushing toilets. The accommodation is quite basic. There are limited laundry facilities so expect to wash your clothes by hand. There is Wifi available at the center. All participants are expected to be environmentally aware and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and organized. The accommodation covers 6 nights and 7 days, so arrival is on Sunday and departure is on Saturday at noon 12:00 Three meals will be provided during weekdays (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and two meals during weekends (breakfast and dinner). The food will be typically Rwandan, which has a lot of potatoes, corn, beans, vegetables, meats, eggs, breads, etc.
You will be accommodated in Nezerwa, a rural village in the outskirts of Kigali. Being here will allow for the best of both worlds as you will get the chance to experience the authentic ruralness of Rwanda while having the capital close by for getaways at the same time! Our center is located in rural Rwanda. This means facilities are limited. However, there are many local shops located within a 5-10 minute walk from our center. Moreover, there are motorbike taxis as well as local buses which depart every 15 minutes and will take you to Kigali City, where you can find ATM’s and anything else you might need such as restaurants, bars, nightclubs, etc. Not so far from our center is Kigali City, where you can enjoy nights out or head to a good restaurant. For those looking to get the most out of the time in Rwanda, there is a national park nearby where you can head to on a weekend to trek, camp and spot gorillas. Moreover, popular beaches are not too far either.
No additional equipment required, but we recommend bringing a notebook and pens for your language lessons and to note down the scrumptious recipes from the cooking classes. Open all year, starting on Mondays, arrival on Sundays and departure on Saturday morning, participation fee of the culturel week: 210€, mandatory to start the programme. Program runs Mon-Fri, (free weekends). Reception at Kigali International Airport (KGL) on Sundays.
