You will be working at a local school where you will be arranging non-formal classes to teach children, teenagers and sometimes adults about proper healthcare. Since Rwanda is a developing country, the people living in small rural villages often lack basic knowledge in hygiene and how to stay healthy. Therefore, you will be teaching the very basics such as how to wash hands, how to use the toilet, how to shower properly, about proper nutrition, etc. You will impart classes in the morning at the school and during the afternoons, you will also be able to educate the grownups during their spare time. Besides improving their health education, we also aim to help them practice English through interaction with foreigners. English is widely spoken in Rwanda and in fact, it was recently made an official language. However, since it is just one of the many languages spoken in the country, the level in rural areas is not ideal and learning the language can have a great impact in the villager’s future. Additionally, since there are many children from poor families whose parents cannot afford to buy healthy food and hence many struggle with malnutrition. For this reason, we also arrange feeding projects where you can take part in. Aims &Objectives: – To educate the villagers and prompt them to have a healthy lifestyle and take care of themselves. – To practice English with the villagers – To support the poorer families with proper food

You will be accommodated in our center which provides shared rooms with 4 – 8 people per room and a shared toilet. There are cold showers available and flushing toilets. The accommodation is quite basic. There are limited laundry facilities so expect to wash your clothes by hand. There is Wifi available at the center. All participants are expected to be environmentally aware and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and organized. The accommodation covers 6 nights and 7 days, so arrival is on Sunday and departure is on Saturday at noon 12:00 Three meals will be provided during weekdays (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and two meals during weekends (breakfast and dinner). The food will be typically Rwandan, which has a lot of potatoes, corn, beans, vegetables, meats, eggs, breads, etc.

You will be accommodated in Nezerwa, a rural village in the outskirts of Kigali. Being here will allow for the best of both worlds as you will get the chance to experience the authentic ruralness of Rwanda while having the capital close by for getaways at the same time! Our center is located in rural Rwanda. This means facilities are limited. However, there are many local shops located within a 5-10 minute walk from our center. Moreover, there are motorbike taxis as well as local buses which depart every 15 minutes and will take you to Kigali City, where you can find ATM’s and anything else you might need such as restaurants, bars, nightclubs, etc. Not so far from our center is Kigali City, where you can enjoy nights out or head to a good restaurant. For those looking to get the most out of the time in Rwanda, there is a national park nearby where you can head to on a weekend to trek, camp and spot gorillas. Moreover, popular beaches are not too far either.

Additional equipment: – Clothes that cover your shoulders and legs down to your knees for your time at the project – Teaching materials of your choice such as games, colors, English books, etc. Open all year, starting on Mondays, arrival on Sundays and departure on Saturday morning, participation fee 175€ per week, participation fee of the culturel week: 210€, mandatory to start the programme. Program runs Mon-Fri, (free weekends). Reception at Kigali International Airport (KGL) on Sundays.
