EKPAZ is the biggest Center for the Protection of Wild Birds in Balkans. It is located on the island of Aigina (1 hour from Athens by boat). There is a small hospital clinic as well as a boutique for visitors who come throughout the year to be informed about the large variety of wild animals.
The volunteers have to be motivated to work. They will clean the nests and cages, they will feed the animals and they will participate in any restoration works. Volunteers work 6 hours /day. (They have one day off per week). -Every day work is about 6 hours. Your duty is to CLEAN and FEED the animals according to the instructions of EKPAZ direction -The working conditions are quite HARD, given the fact that there is a combination of HIGH TEMPERATURE (35C-38C in Summer Time) and SMELL of animals
The lodging conditions are basic (one bed, one shower etc). The volunteers will stay in the guest rooms of the center. Showers and toilets provided. -The nutrition is basic (fruits, vegetables, olive oil, cereals, beans, lentils etc). Occasionaly there are some fresh fishes from the local fishermen but NORMALLY meat and fish ARE NOT included in daily menu (written in the infosheet)
During your free time, you can visit the archeological site on the island and discover also the Greek capital Athens. There is frequent ferry-boat connection to Piraeus port every one hour. There are plenty of bars, coffee shops and internet corners at the town of Aigina.
Volunteers who look for LOW COST holidays MORE than volunteering are REQUESTED NOT to apply for EKPAZ projects. There is NO NEED for tourists but for VERY MOTIVATED volunteers. Extra fee: 180 euros (40 euros paid in advance after registration)
