Project description: A livelihood is sustainable when it can cope with and recover from the stresses and Shocks and maintain or enhance its capabilities and assets both now and in the future without undermining the natural resource base (Chambers &Conway). In every country Tanzania included there are unfortunately many people who have been disadvantaged to sustainable livelihoods based on a number of factors like climate change, political, economic change etc. Fuoni Sacco group is a microfinance project (village community bank) that has been established by community members to address issues affecting them to enhance sustainable living. They have been involved in entrepreneurship trainings, small business and soon they will start small scale industries to produce some products and lending money to its members. We have been working here where team of volunteers join the group members and support them in variety of daily activities. Project Activities: Depending on the skill/interest; participants are expected to be involved in any of the following activities:- Production: We will join local community members in production process of variety of items like soap, lotion, jam, etc. using herbs and local available resources; Social inclusion: We will work at the senior’s home in Zanzibar helping in environmental cleaning using the produced products, provide support to the seniors; Preparation of exhibition: we will work to prepare products to be used for the community entrepreneur’s exhibition to help the group to find market for their produces; Women’s and Youth days’ celebration: Participants will also participate in preparation and be involved in celebrations of International Women’s day celebrations; Sports and recreational activities: Organising sports and other recreational activities for th seniors and community members including children and Youth. Study part: Participants of this project will have an opportunity to experience life with community members. Various Discussions and educational visits on livelihood issues will be organized involving participants of the project, community members and visited places. The major topic will be Sustainable livelihood; please bring information from your home community for sharing.
Accommodation: Participants will be accommodated at the community residential house in the community. Clean water and electricity will be available. Pay attention on the information sheet for things to bring with you. Food: Food will be provided for free at the accommodation. Participants with special dietary requirements should inform us well in advance. Participants are expected to help in preparation of the meals and cleaning with the support of the Kitchen staff. Note: Food will not be provided outside the designated project area.
Project Location: Fuoni is a semi-urban community in the outskirts of Zanzibar stone town. Community members are small farmers, fisheries and small business owners. The community is accessible by both public and private transport. It is located about 20km from town centre and very strategic area to access various daily needs as well cultural and historical attraction of Zanzibar. Free time activities: The project is organized in a way that provides an opportunity for participants to utilize their free time by enjoying what the region offers in terms of cultural and natural attractions. The first week-end Participants will have an opportunity to explore Zanzibar historical, natural and cultural sites. These include museums, local markets, stone town, etc. The second week-end we will have an opportunity to enjoy wildlife and marine life. Jozani forest National Park, Blue safari (Swimming, tour to small islands, variety of water sports, spice tour etc.)
Special Requirements: No special or particular expertise/skills required; however a potential Participant for this project should be flexible, open minded, interested in manual and outdoor activities, easy to adopt and interact with people of different ages and cultures. Language: The official languages of this project are English and Kiswahili. You do not have to be fluent. Terminal: Participants of this project will be picked up at Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam) or any of the Bus or Railway stations in Dar es Salaam. Extra Fee: Participation fee of €250 or equivalent Tanzanian shillings to be paid on arrival day. Participation fee does not cover the cost of medical/health services, all types of insurances, cost of transport to the project community after the orientation, relevant visa or permits, airport drop off on departure date, pocket money, free/leisure activities and other personal expenses. However; participation fee does cover the cost of airport pickups on arrival, orientation on arrival, food and accommodation during the program and general running cost of the project.
