Project description: HIV/AIDS epidemic is continuing to grow despite initial optimism that prevention strategies implemented several years ago were beginning to have a positive impact. According to UNAIDS and WHO, stigma and discrimination, whether actual or feared, remain perhaps the most difficult obstacles to prevention of HIV. This project is therefore organized in collaboration with local authorities to increase awareness of prevention, transmission and infection of HIV/AIDS amongst key groups and also to try and remove some of the stigma attached to people living with HIV and AIDS. Project Activities: Participants will be involved in series of activities leading to exploration, understanding, challenge and act on issues around HIV-AIDS in the community. These include mobilization for free HIV counseling and testing, field visits to HIV/AIDS facilities and service providers. Other activities will include awareness of how to prevent transmission and infection of HIV/AIDS, and issue around stigma and discriminations attached to people living with HIV and AIDS. These will be conducted in a form of workshops, debates, arts and music, sports bonanza/Tournaments, etc. Participants will participate as well in painting and renovation of community health center. Study part: Participants of this project will have an opportunity to experience life with local communities in Dodoma Municipality. Various Discussions and educational visits will be organized involving participants of the project, community members and visited places. The major topic will be Volunteerism against HIV-AIDS. Please bring information from your home community for sharing.
Accommodation: Participants will be accommodated at the student’s hostel and tents. Clean water and electricity will be available. Food: Food will be provided for free at the project. Participants with special dietary requirements should inform us well in advance. Participants are expected to help in preparation of the meals and cleaning with the support of the Kitchen staff. Note: Food will be provided only at the project site.
Location: The project will be hosted in Dodoma. Dodoma mean sunk in gogo language the indigenous people of the region. It is officially the National capital of Tanzania with the population of approximately 410,956. The town is 453km west of the former capital at Dar es Salaam and 441km south of Arusha City. Free time activities: The project is organized in a way that provides opportunity for participants to utilize their free time by enjoying what the region offers in terms of cultural and natural attractions. Possibilities are Capital city sight seen, Kondoa Irangi rock painting, wild life safari, cultural-eco tourism among many options.
Special Requirements: No special or particular expertise/skills required; however a potential Participant for this project should be the one who is social, flexible open minded and independent, interested in cultures, Peace Health issues, travelling, flexible, interested in manual/ outdoor activities and able to work under less supervision. Language: The official language of this project is English and Kiswahili. You do not have to be fluent. Terminal: Participants of this project will be picked up at Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam) or any of the Bus or Railway stations in Dar es Salaam. Extra Fee: Participation fee of €250 or equivalent Tanzanian shillings to be paid on arrival day. Participation fee does not cover the cost of medical/health services, all types of insurances, cost of transport to the project after the orientation, relevant Visas or permits, airport drop off on departure date, pocket money, free/leisure activities and other personal expenses. However; participation fee does cover the cost of airport pickups on arrival, orientation on arrival, food and accommodation during the program and general running cost of the project.
