Project description: This project will be co-hosted by two organizations in East Africa; UVIKIUTA in Tanzania and CIVS in Kenya under the theme “Sustainable community development”. The first two weeks of the program will be spent in Tanzania and the second half in Kenya. This project aims to contribute to the empowerment of young women and women through improved educational facilities. Poor education facilities including the learning environment has been one of the factors contributing to poor performance hence hinder the possibility of managing development challenges like unequal rights, a lack of awareness of rights, low literacy rates, dependency, limited access to education and opportunities to earn a living, and poverty. Participants’ time, skills, and ideas are expected to help in building solidarity and support for young women and men in their pursuit of healthy and sustainable livelihoods. Project Activities: In Tanzania participants of this project will be involved in:-Renovation and painting of school buildings; Participating in greening school campaign through provision of garbage separation facilities and composting; Tree planting and environmental beautification activities. In Kenya; participant will be working at Marianne Centre, which focuses on people with mild to moderate mental disabilities, varying from Down syndrome to Autism, from the age of 16 to 35 years. Activities will include cleaning of the entire centre so that when school reopens then students find it well cleaned, Landscaping including planting of trees and flowers and Farm work which includes working in the greenhouse and open field. Study part: Participants of this project will have an opportunity to experience life with local communities in Tanzania and the Kenya. Various discussions and educational visits will be organized involving participants of the project, community members and visited places. The major topic will be Sustainable community development. Please bring information from your home community for sharing.
Accommodation: In Tanzania participants will be accommodated at the students’ hostel in the community. Clean water and electricity will be available. In Kenya accommodation will be at the project; in this work camp and it is important that you have your own sleeping bag and mat. There will be separate rooms for male and female volunteers. Please pay attention to the information sheet regarding the list of things to bring to the project. Food: Food will be provided for free at the project. Participants with special dietary requirements should inform us well in advance. Participants are expected to help in preparation of the meals and cleaning with the support of the Kitchen staff. Note: We will not provide food outside the designated project area.
Location: Participants of this project will be privileged to be at heart of most famous cultural, natural and attractions countries in Africa. In Tanzania the project location will be hosted in Dodoma Municipality (Newly declared capital of Tanzania in the central part). In Kenya the project will be hosted in Limuru area. Free time activities: The project is organized in a way that provides opportunity for participants to utilize their free time by enjoying what the region offers in terms of cultural and natural attractions. In Tanzania we will have possibilities to see wild animals at Ngorongoro crater &Lake Manyara National Park as well cultural tourism in Masai communities and Kondoa Irangi. In Kenya possibilities are hiking to Longoti Mountain, Hells’ Gate national Park, Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru national Park, Masai Mara, and Cultural tourism along Masai communities.
Requirements: No special or particular expertise/skills required, however a potential volunteer should be; open minded and independent, Interest in outdoor activities, manual work, construction, painting and Nature. Volunteer should be as well interested in plants and work under limited resources. Language: The official language of this project is English and Kiswahili. You do not have to be fluent. Terminal: Participants of this project will be picked up at Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam) or any of the Bus or Railway stations in Dar es Salaam. Extra Fee: Participation fee of €200 or equivalent Tanzanian or Kenya shillings to be paid on arrival day to each Organization (Total fee is €400). Participation fee does not cover the cost of transport from orientation place to the community and between countries, medical/health services, any type of insurances, cost of relevant Visas or permits, airport drop off on departure date, pocket money, free/leisure activities and other personal expenses. However; participation fee does cover the cost of airport pickups on arrival, orientation on arrival, food and accommodation during the program and general running cost of the project. Remarks: Participants will be in Tanzania from 31st July to 13th August 2017 then move from Dodoma via Arusha to Nairobi by Road. It will take approximately 12 hours in the tip. In Kenya the project will be from 14th to 27th August 2017.
