Volunteer for Peace Vietnam – The South Program – International Cultural Youth Exchange
*Aims of the Project: Support to under-privileged children at kindergarten on two issues: – Improving English language for children and developing their English communicative skills. – Taking care of children at kindergarten *Project’s Activities: The kindergarten is sponsored by the church. There are two branch in two different part in the city . The children are from poor family. Their family are mostly immigrants from other provinces, and by the law their kids cannot go to public school in the area where they are staying. For private school, the fee is too high for them. Parents usually have unstable jobs with low income. This project to support for those family/children with very low fee, nearly free. The kindergarten is looking for supporter/sponsor to run the project. Now there are 3 classes. Each class has about 40 kids. They have both morning and afternoon classes. The kid’s age is from 3 to 6 years old. *Community Context: Kindergarten is located in District 3, Ho Chi Minh city. Travelling by bus in 1 hour, sometime longer depend on the traffic. *Volunteer’s Tasks: Volunteers will have responsibility for a class. There are three English class, each lass has approximately 40 students. Volunteers will teach English with 2 Vietnamese teacher in class. You are expected to be active in lesson and get students’ attention. Class will be held three days per week. Each lesson lasts about 1 hour. A part from teaching, volunteers also will help to take care of children in the class and hold some activities. Volunteer will work from Mon to Fri, from 9AM-4PM, with 2hours lunch break.
Volunteers will stay in a dormitory, sharing rooms with volunteers of other nationalities joining the same program. Normally, rooms are arranged with about 2-6 volunteers per room. During peak season, the maximum can go up to 7 or 9 volunteers per room, in 5 bunk beds (9 beds in total). Western toilets and showers are available. Air-conditioner at night time (9PM – 6AM), hot water is also available. The house has TV, PC, free WIFI, fridges, cooking facilities, and a common room &terrace. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided at the dorm. Food is typical Vietnamese meal, prepared by a local cook. The main types of food will be rice, meat, fish, and vegetables. For vegetarians, the choice is usually limited to rice, bread, vegetables, egg, and tofu. During the working day, volunteers will stay at the project site for lunch and for taking a lunch-break. The lunch will be vegetarian food.
The dormitory is located in an urban area of Ho Chi Minh City. It is 5 minutes away from ATMs, two local markets, multiple convenient stores, 20-30 minutes from the nearest supermarket and Banks. Laundry services are 3 minutes away, and cost $0.50 to $1.00 per kilogram. Various choices of restaurants ranging from BBQs, Vietnamese local foods, to other foreign foods such as Korean foods, or Thailand foods. Bowling alleys and Karaoke stores available within 2 kilometers radius.
Minimum age required for participation: 18 Maximum age required for participation: 99 First Language: English Description of specific requirements: Volunteers must be 18 years old minimum. Volunteers must show eagerness,creativity and enthusiatic. Related to this, volunteers need to show creativity and initiative when planning and taking classes. Most importantly, volunteers need to have confidence in the classroom and time management skills to ensure an effective lesson.
