Volunteer for Peace Vietnam – The South Program – International Cultural Youth Exchange
*Theme/ Type of Project: Education *Aims of the Project: Improving English language for the youth and developing their English communicative skills. *Project’s Activities: School of Love – Tan Son Nhi was found by Church. Students are from poor family, immigrant family or from Cambodia,Khomer . Family donot have the Certificate of Land in Ho Chi Minh city so it is hard for them to go to public school. On the other hand, some kids do not have Birth certificate. Also they cannot find a job with good salary so they have to do many jobs. During the day,they go to work so there is no one take care of their kids. Knowing this situation, the church opens school of love. Children are free to go to school. They learn basic subjects like public school. Now for the development of country, they are required to study English, prepare for their future. The school has more than 300 students. There are 10 classes. Because some kids never went to school , they need time to get used to discipline, rules and friends before they go to plubic school. Community Context The School of Love – Tan Son Nhi is located in Binh Tan district. Travelling by bus in about 1,5 hours, depend on traffict. Volunteer’s Tasks: Volunteers will have responsibility for a class. There are 10 English class, each lass has approximately 20 students from 6 to 13 years old. Volunteers will teach English with a Vietnamese teacher in class. You are expected to be active in lesson and get students’ attention. Class will be held from Monday to Friday (From 9h00 to 15:00, with 1,5 hours lunch break). Volunteers also will help teacher take care of children in the class and hold some activities.
Volunteers will stay in a dormitory, sharing rooms with volunteers of other nationalities joining the same program. Normally, rooms are arranged with about 2-6 volunteers per room. During peak season, the maximum can go up to 7 or 9 volunteers per room, in 5 bunk beds (9 beds in total). Western toilets and showers are available. Air-conditioner at night time (9PM – 6AM), hot water is also available. The house has TV, PC, free WIFI, fridges, cooking facilities, and a common room &terrace. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided at the dorm. Food is typical Vietnamese meal, prepared by a local cook. The main types of food will be rice, meat, fish, and vegetables. For vegetarians, the choice is usually limited to rice, bread, vegetables, egg, and tofu. During the working day, volunteers will stay at the project site for lunch and for taking a lunch-break. The lunch will be vegetarian food.
The dormitory is located in an urban area of Ho Chi Minh City. It is 5 minutes away from ATMs, two local markets, multiple convenient stores, 20-30 minutes from the nearest supermarket and Banks. Laundry services are 3 minutes away, and cost $0.50 to $1.00 per kilogram. Various choices of restaurants ranging from BBQs, Vietnamese local foods, to other foreign foods such as Korean foods, or Thailand foods. Bowling alleys and Karaoke stores available within 2 kilometers radius.
Minimum age required for participation: 18 Maximum age required for participation: 65 First Language: English Participation of disabled volunteers: Yes Description of specific requirements: Volunteers must be 18 years old minimum. Volunteers must show eagerness,creativity and enthusiatic. Related to this, volunteers need to show creativity and initiative when planning and taking classes. Most importantly, volunteers need to have confidence in the classroom and time management skills to ensure an effective lesson. Volunteers must speak fluently English.
