Project background Kaya Teleza Conservation Group was formed by local community members in 2011. The formation was prompted by the abuse of the only natural resource in the area, the Kaya forest. Poaching of wild animals and uncontrolled cutting of trees was on the rise. The group aims at collaborating with the Kaya elders together with other conservation institutions to help in protecting the sacred forest and its inhabitants. The group has also initiated agro-business, planting vegetables; as among income generation initiatives to support the majority of the youth who are unemployed. Mission: To encourage the local people to come together to engage in conservation projects to reduce poverty among community members hence promotion of community development. Objectives: To conserve the Kaya Teleza as a national monument and traditional forest; Create job opportunities for the youth; alleviate poverty and idleness from the school leaving youths; Improve living standards of the community at large through community development projects; Create awareness on the importance of conserving Kaya Teleza to the community. Project activities • Forest trails, Agro-business, cultural activities future activities: • Camping site; bee keeping; traditional cuisines; • Fish farming; aloe farming and tree nursery Volunteer tasks • Conservation of the UNESCO listed World Heritage Site at Sacred Mijikenda Kaya Forest • Tree planting and farm work • Awareness creation on voluntourism and its effects on international solidarity • Submit Project Report to KVDA
• Home stay and the volunteer is entitled to private room but will share other amenities and meals with the host family. It is convenient for the volunteer to carry sleeping bag, mat and personal effects. KVDA has a memorandum of understanding with the host project regarding the project costs with appropriate procedures, checks and balances.

PROJECT START DATES • Volunteers are accepted to join this project at any time of the year and should arrive in Kenya on 20th day of the month. The duration of placement is flexible depending on the availability of the volunteer • 2-day orientation seminar will be done on the 21st and 22nd of every month. — – Financial contribution : The project participation fee is Euro 200 per month (for more than 1 month stay).
