Ly Son island, previously known as Cù Lao Ré, is a district in Quang Ngai province, off the south central coast of Vietnam. The district covers approximately 9.97 km² of land, on two off-shore volcanic islands in the East Sea, and a few islets. The main island, Lý S?n (Cù Lao Ré) has three prominent craters, the largest of which is Mount Thoi Loi (Th?i L?i). Hydrothermal waters on Lý S?n provide heat for the local power plant. The secondary island is known as Little Island (Cù Lao B? Bãi) and is also well populated. The island district of Ly Son in Quang Ngai Province is known as not only the homeland of the Hoang Sa Flotilla, but also the kingdom of onions and garlic which have distinctive delicious tastes that other products of its kind cannot compare with. Since 2007, Quang Ngai people’s committee first time launched the tour for local people to vist Ly Son island as one of the most beautiful beach of Vietnam. Together with the development of tourism, the marine eco-system and environment of Ly Son island is threatened.
