Vojvodina Environmental Movement (VEM) is one of the contact points of YRS–VSS involved in sending and hosting volunteers for more than 7 years now. VEM is a non–governmental organization that aims at the creation of sustainable communities, by working on development of environmental protection, ecotourism, youth and volunteer programmes.
The aim of the international volunteer workcamp ’Arboretum’ is to increase awareness of the cultural, historical and educational significance of the natural monument „Dvorska basta” through improving its infrastructure and implementing educational tours of the same. The volunteers will participate in renovating and painting wooden benches, wooden bridge, removing coarse waste and the undue plant material from the stream. They will also help with delivering of educational walks for local residents and their animation. Local volunteers will also take part in the work. “Dvorska basta” translates to “The Court’s Garden” and it used to be a botanical garden.
The volunteers will be accommodated in a youth center “Eco Center Radulovacki” (ekoloskicentar.org), with beds (sheets and pillows), shared bathrooms, working spaces and Wi–Fi included. Lunch will be served in a restaurant, while breakfast and dinner will be prepared by volunteers in the center.
Sremski Karlovci is situated on the slopes of the Fruska Gora mountain, just by the river Danube, in the region of Vojvodina, North Serbia. It is a small, picturesque town with rich past and represents the centre of the Serbian culture and history. It is the place of the oldest Serbian high school and the oldest Serbian theological school, together with the Chappell of Peace (place of peace treaty between the Ottoman Empire and the Holy alliance, famous for the first usage of the “round table” in history). During the leisure time we can offer guided tours around the town and Novi Sad, the second largest city in Serbia. During the workcamp, workshops on the history and dendroflora of “Dvorska basta’’ as well as different methods of animating the visitors are going to be held.
