Theme: Combating homelessness through social enterprise. — Project overview Kabiro school was started in 1976 as a community school. As part of Kabiro Human Development Project. The project has a school, Clinic, Youth &Women sections. This was done by an NGO called ICA (Institute of Cultural Affairs). The school was started as a pre-school and centre for adult education. It was the only school of its kind to take care of overage children and any other interested leaner with minimum requirements. Uniform was not even a necessity at the beginning. Due to these exceptional requirements, the school catered for Children from Kawangware, Kangemi, Kibera and any other slum area within Nairobi. By then admission requirements for joining City Council schools were high and expensive. The school was made of timber walls and iron-sheet roofs. One big hall was built and subdivided using plywood or cartons to make various classes. The most interesting teacher carried the day, distracting the other classes. Teachers who taught in this school had to come from the same community as volunteers. This was due to financial constraints. Salary was not the vocabulary in the school. A teacher would earn by sharing the little that had been sourced. — TYPE OF WORK CAMP: KIDS Volunteers will work for six hours daily from Monday to Friday with focus on the following: Manual work and Intercultural activities: • Painting • Teaching pupils at the Primary School • Visits to spectacular sites within the Kawangware slums • Art work at KITO International that is situated in the project locality. • Cultural days for various nationalities
