Makassar or also spelled Macassar is a capital city of South Sulawesi province and the largest city in Sulawesi island. In one of the district, the local community is developing a unique way of gardening in surrounding their houses. They call it Longgar or Lorong Garden in the area named Kassi-kassi in the centre of Makassar city. They plant various trees, vegetables, fruits and flowers in the plastic bag along the narrow street. The houses and envireiments look very green and cool even during the summer in this city is extremely hot. It makes the people who live in the area feel so comfortable and like to stay. The people in Kassi-kassi also manage the rubbish environmental friendly by having rubbish bank and special method to separate the rubbish and make the rubbish into valuable goods. By doing so, the area looks very clean and healthy, the air also so fresh and the environment is so friendly for people who live in the area.
The volunteers will help local people to manage the garden, renovate the damage bag, planting the trees, etc. Also they will help to manage the rubbish and contribute to give best idea for any problems in the area. They also will assist to help teachers to teach students simple basic English and introduce some English kids songs. They will also involve in other activities like cultural exchange and playing with the kids after the school hour in several extracurricular such as sport, art, scout, music and traditional dance. On the day 9th to 11th the volunteers will have special cultural activities in Makassar and cultural attraction in Sulawesi island. They will learn and practice local tradition or custom and doing activity to support local people to protect and conserve the local culture.
The volunteers will be accommodated in local host family (basic conditions, sleeping bag and mat needed), where they will also receive food. Prefer no vegan (strict vegetarian)
During free time, the volunteers will have the chance to visit the diverse exciting attraction in Makassar. The volunteers may visit beaches, handicraft making centre or traditional market.
The volunteers should accept all the rules and condition of the project. Volunteer is recommended NOT to buy flight ticket at least 2 months before the project start, to avoid the cancellation of the project due to lack of participant.
