The Green Lion

During this program, you will be teaching English at a monastery school. The school offers free education to orphans as well as children whose families cannot afford standard education. With a total of around 6,000 students, you will find yourself teaching from primary to pre-university levels. Our program focuses on the teaching of English to students, especially considering how tourism in Myanmar has risen in the last few years. Speaking English fluently will give the students a chance to communicate as well as get a higher paying job in the future. However, you are welcome to teach any subject you wish as long as you try to implement the English language and prompt the students to speak English during your class. Upon your arrival, you will be shown the teaching and subject schedule in order for you to choose your classes. The monastery school is situated in Nanshe, a residential suburb in Northeast Mandalay. Mandalay is the second largest city and the last royal capital of Burma as well as the economic hub of Upper Myanmar. It is also considered the center of Burmese culture. The monastery school was founded in 1993 by two monks whose aim by opening up the school was to support children from poor families as well as orphans. Today, the school teaches over 6,000 students between 7-18 years and different religious backgrounds. The monastery is also a home to many, with over 1,000 people (from monks to orphans) calling it their home.

About the Accommodation During your participation in the program, you will be staying in an authentic monastery school. There is a school library where you can relax as well as family-owned shops where you can buy basic things. Food Arrangements Food served is basic and Burmese inspired, which consists of lots of rice, vegetables, meat, egg, etc

You will be staying at an authentic Buddhist monastic school located in Northeastern Mandalay. The monastery is the home to over 1,000 children aged 7-18 whose parents are unable to care for or whose homes are too far from Mandalay. Monks and novices reside here as well. The students are friendly and always curious to meet newcomers. Many are pre-university students, which will allow you to interact and make new friends. This is a great chance for an authentic cultural exchange!

Modest clothing – covering your shoulders, legs and down to your knees You are more than welcome to bring teaching materials/resources for your class!
