THE GREEN LION
Support will be given to several kindergarten projects in Kuching for local children of about 4 to 5 years old who are right at the start of their school careers, all mainly from poor villages. They will all be excited to see you and exceptionally welcoming, due partly to the natural and genuine friendliness of all Sarawakian, especially children, but also the fact that you will be one of the few westerners they have met! The kindergarten is informal, same as kindergartens worldwide, and the children will want to play with you more than be ‘taught’ in a formal sense. Your help and assistance will help the kids grow in their confidence and learn better English which will help them in many ways in the future.
About the Accommodation Accommodation is a standard semi-detached house in a residential area called Kali Garden in Kuching. This is one of the typical homes. A small park behind the house is where residents jog and exercise. There is a Malay village and a fishing village within the vicinity. Furthermore, there is a refrigerator which you are welcome to use to store food and beverages. Food Arrangements Malaysian food is tasty and diverse and you can expect to experience a myriad of flavors and meals during their stay. Typical dishes include mee kok lo (noodles and vegetables either dry or soup), nasi goreng (fried rice and vegetables) or roti canai (is a type of Indian influenced flatbread found in Malaysia. Breakfasts are varied and and include toast, cereals, fresh fruit, etc. Tea, coffee and purified water is available at the house. We do not recommend that you drink water straight from the tap.
Sarawak makes access to Borneo’s natural wonders and cultural riches a breeze. Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, is simply unique. No other city in Malaysia has such a romantic and unlikely history, nor displays its charms with such an easy grace. Kuching goes about its own business in a relaxed manner that hasn’t changed in 160 years.
Casual dress is appropriate during your time at the school. However, no-see through clothes or low cut tops are permitted.
