If you love teaching and being with children, experiencing Brazil as a community teacher is something that you will really enjoy! English is a language used for communication worldwide, so by helping to teach these children you are giving them an invaluable skill that broadens their opportunities. Generally, public schools offer very few english classes throughout the week. Therefore they have a language school that offers extra hours for those who need it. These schools offer classes for kindergarten kids up to adults. This is where you mainly will be teaching, mostly the older students. But you might also get the chance to teach in either primary, secondary or high schools around Manaus and you will have plenty of guidance working together with local teachers while following their school curriculum throughout the week. The school here is not always so formal, and in fact, it’s the informal interactions with them that will have the most impact! Simply by having someone to practice with and prompt conversations in english, you’ll be able to help them work on their pronunciation and vocabulary. Exchanging your experiences and culture will be great way to open dialogue and broaden their worldviews…and yours too!
About the Accommodation You will either be staying at the participant house or in a homestay where you will be living in a real brazilian home with one of our students. Food Arrangements All the meals served at the accommodation will be typically brazilian, including rice dishes, potatoes, beans, spaghetti, meat, sandwiches and vegetables. Water, coffee and tea are available all day.
You will be located in the middle of the beautiful brazilian town Manaus, an interesting town located 1,400km from the Atlantic Ocean. Manaus is located in the middle of the Amazon rainforest and has a population of two million. It is quite popular with tourists due to its rivers and proximity to the rainforest. Although lots of tourists come here, it’s not a touristic city. This city has kept its strong culture alive. It’s here in Manaus where the Rio Negro joins the Solimões to form the Amazon River. The river tours here are amazing, and if you are lucky you may even spot some pink dolphins. Manaus if full of trees and lots of beaches for you to truly enjoy yourself.
You are more than welcome to bring teaching materials/resources for your class such as: Interesting board games English Books/Comics Color pencils/erasers And anything else you think will help!
