Local children in Kenya, especially those in the rural areas, do not have any chances to meet and interact with foreigners. Most do not even get the chance to practice English, despite the language being one of the official languages of Kenya. Even interacting and speaking the language properly with them may benefit their learning. The age of students ranges from 6 – 18 years old as you will be placed in either a primary school, a secondary school or a high school in the Gatanga area. Your placement will depend on the local needs at the time. Keep in mind you will be in charge of arranging your own class. This can be done in an informal way and so, you are free to get creative! The favourite activities amongst the youngest students include games, gardening and singing. We aim to teach English through practice and creativity, and you are welcome to provide new ideas to not only teach English, but also to promote an exchange of cultures and conversations between you, fellow participants and the students.

About the Accommodation You will be accommodated in our center. All participants are expected to be environmentally aware and use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will also be expected to clean up after yourself and play your part in keeping the accommodation neat and organized. Food Arrangements Food served will mainly be Kenyan food, which consists of meats, vegetables, potato, eggs, bread, pancakes (commonly known as “chapatti”) and fruits such as oranges, bananas and avocadoes.

Gatanga Village will be your new home and will give you the chance to see authentic rural Kenya. Close by is Thika, an industrial town where you will be able to find anything you need. Nairobi is not too far either, and you can head there during the weekend for nights out or sightseeing. Likewise, there are many natural areas in close proximity to Gatanga, a simple example are Fourteen Falls, a set of waterfalls that will leave you awestruck.

There are no further requirements. Teaching materials such as: Games, books, color pencils, etc Pictures from your country, family and friends Other small cultural objects from your country of origin Modest clothing – covering the knees and shoulders, is required while on the school site
