THE GREEN LION
On this exciting program participants will be involved in important work to maintain and preserve Mahajanga’s wildlife heritage, mangrove conservation. As a conservation participant, you will learn first about the mangrove forest in North-Western Madagascar, its richness, its uses, its threats. You will work first on designing and environmental teaching manual for children. After this you can begin our community environmental education outreach program, helping to highlight the importance of the mangroves and its sustainability to the local communities and schools. You will work on a mangrove forest seedbed. Young plants will firstly be used to reforest as a showcase site and living classroom for local children.
About the Accommodation In our center, there is a dining room, a lounge area where you can hang out with fellow participants and a beautiful garden to relax. Balcony and a large roof terrace is also available for you spend some quality time. Furthermore, there is a refrigerator which you are welcome to use to store food and beverages. Food Arrangements The meals are a mix of Western and Malagasy food, consisting mainly of vegetarian dishes including rice and vegetables. You can expect to have a chicken dish about twice per week. You can also use the kitchen facilities to cook for yourself or eat out at any of the local restaurants at your own expense.
Mahajanga is located in the region of Atsimo-Andrefana and is also the regional capital of this region. Atsimo-Andrefana capital Toliara (Toliara) is approximately 891 km away from Mahajanga. The distance from Mahajanga to Madagascar’s capital Antananarivo (Antananarivo) is approximately 377 km. Apart from different ethnic groups from all over Madagascar, descendants of Comorian, Indo-Pakistanese and Chinese migrants live in harmony with native Sakalava Boeny in Mahajanga, plus Europeans. This cosmopolitan atmosphere makes Mahajanga the ideal place for first time travellers and adventurers to acclimatize to different culture. Ranked among Madagascar’s top tourist destinations, protected areas like Ankarafantsika, Baie de Baly or Tsingy de Namoroka National Parks are home to fauna and flora endemic to Boeny Region whose administrative center is Mahajanga.
