ICYE Honduras

The rehabilitation cycle carried out in CAIPAC includes different therapies in order to boost self-esteem and empower blind people in order to gain confidence to do daily life activities, have a sense of orientation and move around on their own, and learn how to read and write with the Braille system. Residents can learn a handcraft in one of the workshops: pottery, massage-therapy, carpentry, and music. This new know-how helps them to have a source of income to achieve their total independence within society. While living in the centre, residents are also encourage to participate in computer lessons, sports activities, and recreational trips.

Living with a Host Family.

Santa Lucía, Francisco Morazán.

18+ years old. Female or male. A basic knowledge of Spanish. It is preferable, but not necessary, if the volunteer has skills on pottery, massage-therapy, carpentry and/or music. The volunteer must be interested and motivated to work with blind persons, be proactive, patient and creative. Project available to start in February every year for 6-12 months.

ICYE Honduras was founded in 1981. The committee is run by former exchangees and volunteers. The national office, located in Tegucigalpa is run by a four-staff team.

Voluntary service placements include working with homeless and street children, disabled, children’s rights, homes for the elderly, sick or homeless people, health clinics, human rights organisations, indigenous groups, primary schools, youth organisations, and social projects in general. Attendance of university courses is allowed provided it does not interfere with voluntary service.
