Education and shelter for the children of prisoners: With the main wage earner of the family going to prison education of children becomes a casualty. When both the parents go to jail or when the mother goes to jail they are allowed to take children below 7 years to the prison along with them. Prisoners are counseled by FORHD regarding the value of education or undesirable situation of keeping children in prison along with them. Such children are housed in the Makkala Mane run by FORHD at Mysore. – Adoption of schools in slum areas – Feasts &Festivals – Medical service to the poor &prisoners – Communal harmony
Accommodation and food is provided at the host project.
The volunteer must have patience, be mature, committed, friendly, have English knowledge, be open-minded, adjustable and hard working. The ICYE programme started in India in 1983. Inter Cultural Dialogue &Exchange – India, (ICDE – India), founded in 2006 by a group of former ICYE volunteers is a secular organisation, with its main office in Bangalore, Karnataka, India.
Voluntary service host placements, mostly in Karnataka and adjacent South Indian states, include homes for street children, orphanages, disabled, old age homes, people with HIV/AIDS, health care, agriculture / farming, women’s projects, rural and community development, etc. ICYE India, upon request, offers opportunities to learn/study yoga, Indian music and Indian classical dance, music, herbal medicine, Indian philosophy, spirituality.
