The Green Lion
Family and smallholder farms are the primary resource for income and food supply for households in many parts of the country. They account for 90% of domestic food supply in Mozambique. In this program, you will get the chance to experience the authentic countryside of Mozambique by living amongst locals and helping out in village farms. Your tasks will include cutting and cleaning up grassy areas around the farm, planting, watering, picking fruits, helping take care of the livestock and overall community work depending on what is needed at the time. Working up close with local farmers will not only teach you new skills, but will also get you immersed in a new culture and lifestyle. Aims &Objectives : Promote agriculture in Mozambique, Support local farmers with labour, Increase your knowledge of local Mozambican farmers and farming methods.
About the Accommodation : You will be staying in our program center. The accommodation is shared between 12 people with 4-8 people per room and shared bathrooms. All participants are expected to be environmentally aware and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. Your rooms will be cleaned daily by staff but please try to clean up after yourself, and help play your part to keep the accommodation neat and organized. Food Arrangements : Meals are inspired by the local cuisine which is rich in fish, cassava, nuts, paozinho, spices, seasoning, maize, millet, potatoes, rice, sorghum, fruits, and sugarcane. We provide 3 meals during weekdays (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and 2 meals (breakfast and dinner) in the weekend at the program center.
You will be staying in Fidel Castro Village located just outside Xai Xai, the capital of the Gaza Province. Being only 30 minutes away from downtown Xai Xai, you’ll have access to many local shops, banks, grocery stores, cafes as well as surrounding beaches and towns including Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique.
Additional Equipment : Clothes that cover your shoulders and knees for visiting temples, schools and sacred sites.
