Animals are a big part of experiencing Africa, but it’s a responsibility to preserve these beautiful animals from going extinct and provide a balance to the ecosystem too! Tanzania is a popular destination for safari tours, but it can invite poachers who want to hunt those animals for their own business interests. But in rural areas under the management of local wildlife authorities, an area where animals living together with human peacefully, there live a brave group of villagers working hard to preserve these local wildlife. Known as Village Game Scouts, these individuals prioritize wildlife conservation, and regularly keep checks on illegal poachers. They also ensure those who would like take pictures of wild animals understand the rules and boundaries, and keep a check on people who may cut down too much tree for firewood, helping preserve the resource for both animals and local villagers. They are also responsible for giving wildlife education to local students in the village as well, planting the importance of wildlife awareness in future generations…no small task! During this program you will be working with these Scouts of the Emboreet village, of the Simanjiro district, placed in the Manyara region. The Villagers here have gotten used to to living side by side with the animals there, and there is even a small forest where animals stay beside the villagers housing compound where wild beasts, grand gazelles, zebras, the secretary bird and ostrich will frequently cross paths with you, especially during breeding season. This Village hosts wildlife animals who may be breeding during the rainy season from December to June…so expect to interact with more animals during this time! Your main activity during this program will be experiencing the daily life of the Scouts by assisting them on their scouting routines. You’ll also be monitoring wild animals that vary in different seasons and will be asked to present the knowledge you’ve gained about wildlife conservation with local students either in the local schools or in village center.
