ICYE Nepal


Light for Nepal is established in May 2005 in Kathmandu District. With a strong desire of offering free education, food and shelter for orphan and disadvantage children. Some of their parents have died due to the disease and some of their parents have unstable incomes, frequently move between different jobs and often move house amongst other reasons. There are currently 17 children from 3 years to 15 years. The aim of the program is to provide food, shelter and education for orphanage and disadvantages children. Main Activities Light of Nepal has a strong desire to offer free education, food and shelter for orphans and disadvantaged children. Some of the children´s parents have died due to the disease and some parents have unstable incomes, frequently move between different jobs and often move to other houses, etc. There are currently 17 children from 3 to 15 years old. Volunteer tasks The volunteer will be: Teaching health and sanitation. Entertaining and run activities like games. Helping the children wash their faces and brush their teeth. Helping them in their studies. Making sure they eat properly, including serving them or being with them to encourage to eat and make them feel cared for and loved. Preparing them for school, including ensuring their uniforms are clean and proper. Checking if the children are clean and net at all times. Some additional (extra) responsibilities for the volunteer: Going for sightseeing, picnic, to zoo with the children. Doing educational and cultural visits. Going to the school with the children. Doing sanitation of rooms. Washing the childrens´ clothes. Teaching the children drawing, songs and any musical instruments. Knitting and weaving the childrens´ torn clothes. Note: Outdoor extra activities must be funded by the volunteer.


This is a residential project so the volunteer will stay inside the project, sharing rooms with volunteers of other nationalities joining the same program. Lunch &dinner are provided at the project. Food is local style, cooked by a Nepalese family. The main types of food will be rice, lentil soup and vegetables but once a week project person will provide you meat in your lunch or dinner. For vegetarians the choice is usually limited to vegetables, lentil soup and pickle.


Light for Nepal is located in a Nepali community in Kathmandu District and mainly local people of Kathmandu Valley . Drive by cab takes 45 minutes from the Airport.


Volunteers must be 18 years old minimum. Volunteers must show eagerness, the ability to maintain motivation and reliability. Related to this, volunteers need to show creativity and initiative when planning and taking part. Most importantly, volunteers need to have confidence in their work, time and management skills to ensure an effective support.

The ICYE programme started in Nepal in 2001. In 2004 it was renamed Nepal Volunteers and Cultural Youth Exchange Program (NVCYE-Program). The main office is in Kathmandu

The mainstay of the programme is voluntary service in urban and rural project located in the different parts of Nepal. Most volunteer placements are in teaching English, orphanages, conservation/eco-work, health care, rehabilitation and natural healing.
