The Rifugio Carlo Alberto was built in 1898 aiming to support and host ill elders coming from other health care centers. Nowadays Rifugio is run by the Valdese church with the help of volunteers and staff members. The Rifugio Re Carlo Alberto is made up by two main structures: ? The main one, which hosts 84, most of them non-self sufficient elders or affecyed by dementia, some disabled adults; ? The daily centre for 12 people affected by Alzheimer or dementia; ? A third minor structure is the Caffè Alzheimer, in Pinerolo town. — VOLUNTEER’S TASKS: The volunteer will be involved in the daily center and in the residential center. During the first period of adaptation, he/she will test each activity to understand which one is most suitable to his/her skills and attitudes. This phase is very important in order to implement the project’s goals and to overcome possible communication problems with the guests. According to this, any of the activities described below will be open to volunteer’s suggestions. Supporting recreational and rehabilitation activities The volunteer will support staff members in the recreational and rehabilitation activities run inside and outside the centre. These activities are: -Serving meals -Gym -Shopping -Excursion to the nearby zone -Music-therapy -Exercises for the maintainance of the cognitive functions. The volunteer’s presence will contribute to stimulate guests to take part to such activities. He/she will also be able to suggest other new activities according to his/her culture, for example international cooking or traditional music and dance shows.
Accommodation The volunteer will have a single or double room with bathroom inside the project structure at the last floor which is an area reserved to the volunteers. Food The volunteer will have breakfast, lunch and dinner inside the project with the guests. Having lunch or dinner with the other people is seen as a good way to share and live together. The volunteer will be provided with a fridge in order to keep personal extra food and drinks.
Local community The project is located in the village of Luserna San Giovanni, the biggest village (8.000 inhabitants) in the Pellices valley area. The Pellices valley boarders to France. The nearest town is Pinerolo. The population of the valley is about 22.000 inhabitants, divided in 9 villages. There are a train station, a post office, banks, shops, sports centers and other services.
Working hours The volunteer will work about 7 hours every day from Monday to Friday, and will have 2 days off every week. The weekly working time is 35 hours. In the centre, the daily working time is usually: 9.00 a.m. – 1.00 p.m. / 2.00 p.m – 5.00 pm. In the units the the daily working time is usually 9.00 a.m. – 1.00 p.m. / 2.00 p.m – 5.00 pm. or 11.00 a.m. – 1.00 p.m. / 2.00 p.m. – 7.00 p.m. The timetable will be set up according to the volunteer’s skills/preferences and according to the activities proposed in the units or in the daily center. — STARTING DATES Volunteers can arrive any day from Monday to Friday (possibly from 9 am till 8pm) except on Italian national holidays. — Minimum stay is 3 weeks (600 €), each extra week is 100€.
