Ilha de Mozambique is located about 200 km east of Nampula city, the capital. Declared a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site in 1992 is linked to the mainland by 1.5 km long single lane causeway, the crescent shaped island measures a mere 2.5km from north to south and is at no point more than 600m wide. Despite of its small size the island support a population of roughly 7000 and as the most important Portuguese settlement on the East African coast for the best part of the centuries, it boast several of the oldest extant colonial buildings in the southern hemisphere. — Leisure Activities : Weekends are meant to be for free tours that the group can organize by itself. You can decide to visit places of interest around the area of the work camp. It has now become a custom in all our Workcamps to have cultural nights. This affords each volunteer the opportunity to present her/his country and culture. Please bring with you your national flag and traditional dress if possible. Sports and artistic moments will be organized together by the participants and local community. In some cases the workcamp may run during special event (festival, fairs, workshops and others) occurring close to the area where the camp will be running.
The workcamp participation fee is strictly US$250 and this covers simple accommodation, food and project expenses during the camp. Please note that this does not include travel expenses to and from the camp, so participants are asked to reserve a small amount of money for transport to the camp and vice-verse. We advise all volunteers to ask for advice from us when they are planning to book their ticket to Mozambique.
