Kenya Voluntary Development Association (KVDA) is an indigenous, non-political and membership organization which is non-sectarian and non-profit making started in 1962 as a work camp organization registered under the Societies’ Act. In 1993, KVDA was registered as a Non-Governmental organization by the establishment of the NGOs Coordination Act. KVDA has since inception hosted over 50, 000 international volunteers to its community service development projects that have left indelible mark to efforts to enhance sustainable development.
PROJECT BACKGROUND : KITO International is a non-profit social enterprise dedicated to getting youth off the streets and out of poverty. Inspired and founded by a former street boy, KITO combats homelessness by providing economic opportunities. KITO trains youth in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, employability skills, and life skills. After 2 months of intensive training, KITO youth are temporarily employed with KITO?s social enterprise, EcoSafi, in order to gain hands-on experience in a formal employment setting. KITO staff and supporters also seek opportunities to link KITO youth to mentorships, internship, or apprenticeships in and around the community in order to expand the youth?s knowledge and confidence in order to set them on the path towards self-sufficiency. KITO is dedicated to the success of each and every youth that walks through its doors and customizes each youth?s exit strategy to ensure their continued success and growth. Previous KITO graduates have continued their education, secured full-time employment, and started their own business. VOLUNTEER TASKS : • Training youths in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, employability and life skills • Mentorship and apprenticeship • Design and production of custom made bags from bio degradable materials, printing of T-Shirts and other related works • Submit Project Report to KVDA.
• Volunteers accepted on this project will be accommodated at KVDA Residence in Karen situated approximately 15 Kilometers away from the project • It should be noted that the volunteers will cater for their own commuter expenses to and from the project • We recommend that the volunteers should carry a sleeping bag and mat among other personal effects.
LOCATION : KAWANGWARE SLUMS, NAIROBI CITY. LEISURE : Kenya is replete with a lot of interesting and natural spectacular sites of interest that would capture the imagination of volunteers. From the tour to the renowned Maasai Mara Game Reserve to visits to local community beholding sights, the volunteers have the previledge to make choices that would fundamentally make the difference. The project also offers a perfect opportunity for people who enjoy being close to nature and are interested in the spectacular setting that traditional way of living in the heartland of the African culture would enrich your cultural heritage.
PROJECT START DATES : Volunteers are accepted to join this project at any time of the year and should arrive in Kenya on 20th day of the month. The duration of placement is flexible depending on the availability of the volunteer. 2-day orientation seminar will be done on the 21st and 22nd of every month.
